I’ve recently become very interested in the idea of breeding feeder insects, but honestly I’m still at the very beginning and don’t really know where to start. I’ve been reading a lot and it seems like insects such as mealworms, superworms, and roaches can be a great source of food for reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and even some small mammals. It also looks like a small insect farm doesn’t require huge space, which makes the idea even more interesting.
Right now I’m trying to understand the basics:
- Which insects are the best to start with?
- What equipment or setup is absolutely necessary in the beginning?
- Is it better to start small at home or invest in something bigger from the start?
Another big question for me is where to sell them once production starts. Do most breeders sell to pet shops, reptile owners, fishing stores, or directly online to hobbyists? How do you usually find your first customers?
If anyone here has experience breeding feeder insects, I would really appreciate any advice, tips, or even warnings about common mistakes beginners make.
Thanks in advance! 🐛
